THE SYLVIA WOODS FAMILY COLLAGE DRESS, By Sharon E. Clarke.

Sylvia

Sharon E. Clarke is one busy woman! Yet, she takes time to pay homage to those who have inspired her. The late New York restauranteur, Sylvia Pressley Woods is one of those that left a lasting impresion on Sharon. So, it comes to no surprise that her passing left a vacuum in a lot of people including the Harlem Neighborhood that she called home for many years. I got a chance to sit down with CEO of F.A.M to ask her some questions and a reaction to her Sylvia Dress that was debuted at the Sylvia’s 50th anniversary on September 17th, 2012.

When did you move to Harlem? More than 11 years ago.

How long have you known Sylvia? Since 2001

What is the depth of your friendship? My daughter and I met Sylvia when we just moved to Harlem in 2001. My daughter Nkenge was eight years old at the time. One day I saw Sylvia standing outside the restaurant. I went up to her and introduced myself as a fashion designer. At that time, I had no clue how powerful she was. I went on to say that I just move to Harlem and I live on 129th Street. She called her grand daughter Treness and told her to be my friend…that I was new in the area and the grand kids should go up to my apartment to see what I got. They went to my house and tried on a few designs. We’ve been friends ever since then.

What inspires you the most about Sylvia as an entrepreneur? I’m inspired by Sylvia’s tenacity to keep her family together with unconditional love over so many years. She believed in God’s words ‘Give and you shall receive.’ I believe that the good she has done through out the years reflect on her family and business today.

What inspired the Sylvia 50th Anniversary dress? Her family.
